Writing Consultations
Our consultants can assist with any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to finished draft. As usual,no appointment is necessary, but they are often useful.
What happens in a writing consultation? No matter what stage of writing and no matter your writing skills, the basic process for a consultation is the same. One of the StudioLab's consultants will sit down with you to go over the paper and discuss ideas and concepts.
We will not edit the paper for you and we don't do "grammar checks"--you are the one who will take notes or make comments on the paper as you notice anything in it that you might want to change. We focus on higher order concerns, such as flow, organization, content, or support for your thesis statement. The only situations in which we'll talk about grammar are when clients are having a particularly hard time with certain aspects of grammar usage. For instance, if our consultant notices a client has consistent problems in a paper with comma splices, we'll talk about what a comma splice is, show the client an example in his or her own paper, and help the client learn how to spot his or her own mistakes with grammar.
We want to help show clients how to think more critically about their own writing and understand it as a process, not just a means to an end.
The StudioLab consultants meet you wherever you are in the paper and help you progress to the next level. But we're not just a place for those who "need help": everyone can benefit from intelligent conversation about their work!
