CCLC has a policy of minimal policy-making: our preference is to be as flexible as possible in serving the University community. Experience has demonstrated, however, that having a few guidelines in place helps to ensure our effectiveness. Your cooperation with these policies is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions about any of the policies on this page, please contact Dr. Jane Love, Director of the CCLC.
Consultations
We accept clients by both walk-in and appointment. This means that if you suddenly find that you could use some advice or someone to help you figure out how to get the program you're using to do what you want, you can just stop by CCLC and talk to one of our student consultants. On the other hand, if you know that the project involves technology or steps you don't know how to do, you can call us at x2323 and set up an appointment.
Consultations are normally about 30 minutes in duration. However, we're well aware that some projects are more complex than others and that some folks might need a little extra help. Our policy of limiting consultations to 30 minutes at a time has both a practical and a pedagogical purpose behind it: it allows the consultants to distribute their attention more equably among clients, and it allows you the opportunity to apply what you've just learned and figure out the next question to ask. Think of this as our gentle way of encouraging active learning!
Technology reservations can last up to 2 hours. For specific information about video appointments, see this section.
Please note that consultations take place within the CCLC. Occassionally a consultant may choose to assist a faculty member in a project outside the scope of the CCLC or a project that affects the CCLC directly. However, consultants will not make "house calls" for any reason. If you need any assistance, please come to the CCLC or make an appointment.
While we would love to be able to provide phone consultations and support, we're not equipped to do so at this time. If you do call with a question, be aware that the consultants are not permitted to spend more than three (3) minutes on the phone with you. If the consultant estimates that your question will require more time, or if it extends beyond three minutes' duration, she or he will invite you to visit us here in the Collaboratory, where we can give you more sustained attention.
Clients are expected to remain present in CCLC while their work is occupying the equipment. We are not a drop-off facility, and we will not babysit your work for you or reserve equipment for you in your absence. If you must leave, please save your work, close your files, and log off.
back to topPlagiarism
CCLC supports Furman's academic policy on plagiarism as outlined in the pamphlet available from Associate Dean Linda Bartlett's office. (If you have any questions about what constitutes plagiarism, please consult this pamphlet.) In keeping with our mission to support students academically, any instances of potential (and, we presume, inadvertent) plagiarism that arise during consultations will be addressed with advice on proper documentation and paraphrasing skills, thus resolving the problem before it occurs. CCLC consultants are not permitted to work on papers or projects that contain instances of knowing and deliberate plagiarism.
